Everyone has the ability to learn mathematics and do
proofs; the only question is how do you go about it? You can spend many hours
studying the material and still not understand it enough to do the homework,
you can understand many proofs and still not write your own. Its not just a
matter of time and effort, it is also a matter of learning how to learn
mathematics. Remember unless you are a super-genius there are no shortcuts
to learning math or doing proofs, it requires a lot of work but it will pay
off in the end. The ultimate test of any study technique is not how
well you understand the concept or problem, rather how well you can solve
problems and prove theorems within your subject, without help. Understanding
a concept (unit circle, groups, derivatives, etc) is different from applying
a concept (solving problems). Understanding the concepts is subjective
applying the concepts is objective. Neither mere
understanding or mere knowledge of application is sufficient; rather, the
goal is to think and solve problems like a good mathematician
or physicist. The younger that people start applying the ideas
outlined in this website, the easier it will be to learn and apply abstract
concepts as an adult. The younger you start the better. Someone can explain to you the solution to a problem
or the proof to a theorem, but unless you derive the solution or proof for
yourself, you will not develop the reasoning helpful in solving future
problems or proving future theorems. The goal is to understand how you could have
derived the solution or proof yourself. One of the problems I see in many students is the
desire to be taught by a super-teacher, or to attend a super-school. They
think that if they simply attend the lectures of this super-teacher, or
simply attend this super-school they will be transformed into super-students.
I once heard someone say, any business that requires super-men to run it, is
not a good business. I think this is wholly applicable to students; any
student that requires a super-teacher or super-school to learn is not a good
student. A teacher cannot make you study when you should, nor can a
teacher make you follow good study habits. The difference between good
students and poor students is not wholly dependent upon the teacher; it also
depends upon how much each student demands from him or herself. Granted,
some students may not know what to demand from themselves or how to reach
what they demand for, that is why I created this website. The end purpose of this website is to outline a
system of study and thought. The power of a system is twofold first, it
provides a path to a goal, and second, it is portable. By portable, I mean
that one does not necessarily need the guidance of the person who wrote the
system to understand and implement it. I would add one proviso to my system
namely; always try to find ways to improve the system. Quote
